Chapter 35 - Wicked Vine Growers
Wicked Vine Growers
Matt. 21:33-39

33 Hear [akouo] another [allos] parable [parabole] : There was [en] a certain [anthropos] [tis] householder [oikodespotes] , which [hostis] planted [phuteuo] a vineyard [ampelon] , and [kai] hedged [phragmos] it [autos] round about [peritithemi] , and [kai] digged [orusso] a winepress [lenos] in [en] it [autos] , and [kai] built [oikodomeo] a tower [purgos] , and [kai] let [ekdidomi] it [autos] out [ekdidomi] to husbandmen [georgos] , and [kai] went into a far country [apodemeo] :
34 And [de] when [hote] the time [kairos] of the fruit [karpos] drew near [eggizo] , he sent [apostello] his [autos] servants [doulos] to [pros] the husbandmen [georgos] , that they might receive [lambano] the fruits [karpos] of it [autos] .
35 And [kai] the husbandmen [georgos] took [lambano] his [autos] servants [doulos] , and beat [dero] one [hos] , [men] and [de] killed [apokteino] another [hos] , and [de] stoned [lithoboleo] another [hos] .
36 Again [palin] , he sent [apostello] other [allos] servants [doulos] more [pleion] than the first [protos] : and [kai] they did [poieo] unto them [autos] likewise [hosautos] .
37 But [de] last of all [husteron] he sent [apostello] unto [pros] them [autos] his [autos] son [huios] , saying [lego] , They will reverence [entrepo] my [mou] son [huios] .
38 But [de] when the husbandmen [georgos] saw [eido] the son [huios] , they said [epo] among [en] themselves [heautou] , This [houtos] is [esti] the heir [kleronomos] ; come [deute] , let us kill [apokteino] him [autos] , and [kai] let us seize [katecho] on his [autos] inheritance [kleronomia] .
39 And [kai] they caught [lambano] him [autos] , and cast [ekballo] him out of [exo] the vineyard [ampelon] , and [kai] slew [apokteino] him. KJV-Interlinear

33 'Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard and put a wall around it and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and rented it out to vine-growers, and went on a journey. 34 'And when the harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the vine-growers to receive his produce. 35 'And the vine-growers took his slaves and beat one, and killed another, and stoned a third. 36 'Again he sent another group of slaves larger than the first; and they did the same thing to them. 37 'But afterward he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' 38 'But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and seize his inheritance.' 39 'And they took him, and threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. NASB

This is the second of three parables dealing with the condemnation, judgment, and doom of those who reject Jesus Christ in their life. But remember that though this parable deals with unbelievers, its principles also apply to believers who reject Bible doctrine in their life - never learning and consequently never having any significant spiritual life.

In order to have a spiritual life of significance one has to learn Bible doctrine, be in fellowship and basically grow up spiritually. Anyone who does not transfer that doctrine of God into their soul does not grow up. Rejecting Gods Word means that believers accept the opinion of the world. In which case believers imitate the very soulish characteristics of all unbelievers. They (believers) will certainly go to heaven but in this life, by lacking or rejecting Gods Word, they think and act just like unbelievers.

That said, Jesus points out some interesting observations in this parable. But first the parable itself. God the Father built a vineyard (planet earth). He built a wall around about it (mankind's containment within that vineyard). God provided for production (the winepress). He provided the vines (resources of planet earth). He built a tower (Bible doctrine) in the vineyards center, for observation and storage. Note that all can see the tower (Bible doctrine) regardless of wherever one might be in the vineyard (planet earth).

God rented this vineyard out to tenants (mankind), and offered to share its produce. But here is where the story really begins. Mankind became selfish, rejected the owners interest, and wanted all the production of the vineyard. Is this not similar to Satan's objective? To take all of the universe for himself? To be like the most high?

So mankind is following the same historical pattern as Satan took when he (Satan) rejected God in the distant past.

God sent His slaves (the prophets) to collect His share of the production (believers). Mankind rejected the prophets and killed them (Old Testament history). Then God sends His only Son to collect that which is His, and the Son is killed (crucifixion).

But here is the very interesting part. They (mankind) knew who the Son was. They did not mistake Him for another slave (prophet) sent by the Owner (God the Father). They actually knew who He was and they knew His identity. They (mankind) plotted (premeditation) to kill Him (the Son) and then to take everything for themselves. They not only wanted the production of planet earth (their own glory and accolade), but now they wanted the entire vineyard (the inheritance of the Son - planet earth, eternal life, etc.). And, they wanted it all on their own terms. The owner (God the Father) who is certainly acknowledged, is rejected as the owner and now is being stolen from.

This parable lays the groundwork for mankind and mankind's understanding of life and the facts of life. In short, everyone sooner or later is able to see the tower in the middle of the vineyard (Bible doctrine in human history). They also know and understand who the owner is (God the Father - the one and only God). Mankind also knows and rejects the Son, Jesus Christ. Mankind knowingly and with conscious awareness, makes a clear and concise decision in their rejection of God and His Son and His Plan for history. There are no accidents, no misunderstandings, no confusing issues. Therefore there are no excuses when the end of history comes to greet us all.

For unbelievers, this is a grave decision because it defines their eternal inheritance in the Lake of Fire. For believers who subsequently reject Gods Word following their initial faith in Christ, and therefore do not develop their spiritual life, this means a conscious decision to substitute their own stubborn will in place of Gods Will.

This leads to a life of misery and an eternal life with less reward than they could have had for all of eternity. Stubborn people will usually follow a pattern of misery, blame of others, anger and even rage against anyone who might happen into their path. If they do not put their stubbornness in check, if they do not stop emphasizing 'self' in their thoughts (and this they do consciously knowing what they are doing), then they will slip ever deeper into a pit of trouble for their lives until God simply turns away from them and lets them sink into the destruction of their own lives.

If however a person wakes up and begins the process of changing their pattern of life (to one from Bible doctrine instead of from the sin nature), then their life will turn completely around, and better and better things await them both in time and in eternity.

Stubbornness is tough to overcome, but it is not impossible. Stubbornness is one fighting within ones own self, and refusing to apply a humbleness to ones life. On our own, no one can defeat stubbornness, but with daily Bible study, then Bible doctrine is very much capable of defeating stubbornness.

These chief priests were a very stubborn, and stiff necked people. They refused to change, though they certainly knew exactly what they were doing and of what Jesus was teaching. The parable demonstrates the Owners' (Gods) unusual patience, and it also demonstrates the vine-growers extreme evil. When Bible doctrine is rejected then any person can easily become as evil as these. End of Lesson
