Chapter 23 - Ten Minas
Ten Minas
Luke 19:11

11 And [de] as they [autos] heard [akouo] these things [tauta] , he added [prostithemi] and spake [epo] a parable [parabole] , because [dia] he [autos] was [einai] nigh [eggus] to Jerusalem [Hierousalem] , and [kai] because they [autos] thought [dokeo] that [hoti] the kingdom [basileia] of God [theos] should [mello] immediately [parachrema] appear [anaphaino] . KJV-Interlinear

11 And while they were listening to these things, He went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. NASB

Jesus had just been passing through Jericho, and stopped there for the night. The crowds were huge. The last Passover was just days away, and Jesus was heading for Jerusalem.

He had been in His ministry for three and a half years now. He had been teaching salvation, the spiritual life, and the Kingdom of God. In addition he had been performing so many miracles on a daily basis, that the huge crowds were now numbered in the tens of thousands. There was an expectation by all, even by his Apostles, that the Kingdom of God was just about to be installed.

The Jewish belief by this time in history, was that the Messiah would come in all His glory, destroy all the bad guys in the world and establish His Kingdom. The Pharisees and other leadership were expecting some royal appearance of God, and that they would be the official reception party for the Son of God. They of course did not accept that Jesus, was this royal person.

The Apostles thought that Jesus would simply use one of His miracles to blast away those who opposed Him and of course then set them in high positions within the Kingdom.

The masses of people were so long oppressed and under so much pressure, that they would accept anyone who would come along, promise them anything, give them relief from their physical and financial problems, do away with the Romans, do away with the regulatory pressures of the day, and give them a whole lot of something for nothing.

Expectations were high, and expectations were unreasonable. People were looking to what they were going to get out of all of this, and they were not looking to the written scriptures which had taught that a sacrifice was necessary first, before any glory can come about. Thus the Passover Feast. People simply did not see the purpose of the Passover and the spiritual principles of salvation that it taught.

So now Jesus is going to teach a parable which will cover three things.

First, the varieties of reward that will be apportioned to different degrees of success in the spiritual life. Second, the eternal loss and shame which will be the portion of the indifferent and unfaithful servant. Third, the terrible doom of the enemies of God.

These three things we all prepare for (or not), but the reality of these will not occur until we enter into the next life. For the first two, reward will be issued (or not issued) at the Judgment Seat of Christ. By the way, that is a good place to be in eternity.

And for the last item, the enemies of God (unbelievers), their doom will be sealed at the Great White Throne. That is definitely not the place to be when history comes to an end.

Jesus is facing a huge crowd. In it, there were those who were going to crucify Jesus, there were those who were indifferent to the spiritual life (they just wanted something for nothing), and there were those who were under the expectation of receiving a lot when the Kingdom came into existence.

Now we have the parable which will teach to all, that the spiritual life comes with additional great rewards, but they are potential. You will either qualify for them or you won't. End of Lesson
