Chapter 22 - Sower
Matt. 13:22
22 He also [de] that received seed [speiro] among [eis] the thorns [akantha] is [esti] he that [houtos] heareth [akouo] the word [logos] ; and [kai] the care [merimna] of this [toutou] world [aion] , and [kai] the deceitfulness [apate] of riches [ploutos] , choke [sumpnigo] the word [logos] , and [kai] he becometh [ginomai] unfruitful [akarpos] . KJV-Interlinear
22 'And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. NASB
Mark 4:18-19
18 'And others are the ones on whom seed was sown among the thorns; these are the ones who have heard the word, 19 and the worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. NASB
Luke 8:14
14 'And the seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity. NASB
The weed infested soul is one who has little or no room for Bible doctrine. What little doctrine gets into the soul is quickly squeezed out. That person is preoccupied with worldly things.
What are worldly things? Concern or concentration on anything which comes from the world with total disregard for God, the ultimate source of all things. That should be a simple enough definition. Some people say love of money is the root of all evil, and that is true if there is preoccupation (love of) of money or wealth to the extent that it consumes your thoughts and life.
But worldliness is not limited to just money. A person can be consumed with his social life, sex, career, fashion, TV or entertainment of any sort, sports, hobbies, laziness, work, business, the hustle and bustle of life in general. A person can even be just plain lazy - home after work, if there is any work, with a cold one in one hand and the remote in the other hand.
Whatever preoccupies ones thoughts, as long as it excludes Bible doctrine, as long as it excludes any form of Bible study or minimizes it, then the space that exists in the soul is filled up with weeds. The person is worldly whether he acknowledges it or not.
Bible doctrine is a subject with which there is indifference. The activities of the world are of more importance. A person can see his worldly life. A person can see work, social acquaintances, the challenge, anticipation, or excitement of the social pursuit. A person can measure the money or wealth he commands (or lack of it) and so forth. Thus the mind is occupied with those activities and the pursuit of happiness (or constant worry) is wrapped up in their definition - money, security, social life, etc.
The truth is inevitably ignored and the false is pursued. All lust of the flesh, lusts of the eyes, lusts of the ears, etc. are of this world, 1 Jn. 2:15-16.
Were it not for Bible doctrine, no one in this world would ever know of sin and all things would be acceptable, Rom. 7:7-12. Without Gods information, we would have no standard to compare to, thus no frame of reference with respect to norms and standards and morals in life. Societies without doctrine have very degenerate and immoral standards by which they live. They are peoples with souls full of weeds.
As there is no substitute for Bible doctrine (no other religion, no other philosophy), then there is no cure for the weeds in the soul except Bible doctrine. The weeds of life compete for the resources of the individuals mind. When the weeds win, the good seed of doctrine is squeezed out.
