Chapter 13 - Lost Coin
Lost Coin
Luke 15:8-10
8 Either [e] what [tis] woman [gune] having [echo] ten [deka] pieces of silver [drachme] , if [ean] she lose [apollumi] one [mia] piece [drachme] , doth not [ouchi] light [hapto] a candle [luchnos] , and [kai] sweep [saroo] the house [oikia] , and [kai] seek [zeteo] diligently [epimelos] till [heos] [hotou] she find [heurisko] it?
9 And [kai] when she hath found [heurisko] it, she calleth [sugkaleo] her friends [philos] and [kai] her neighbours [geiton] together [sugkaleo] , saying [lego] , Rejoice [sugchairo] with me [moi] ; for [hoti] I have found [heurisko] the piece [drachme] which [hos] I had lost [apollumi] .
10 Likewise [houto] , I say [lego] unto you [humin] , there is [ginomai] joy [chara] in the presence [enopion] of the angels [aggelos] of God [theos] over [epi] one [heis] sinner [hamartolos] that repenteth [metanoeo] . KJV-Interlinear
8 'Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 'And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost!' 10 'In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.' As Jesus Christ goes to great pains searching far and wide throughout the earth to find lost sheep (believers) who belong in the fold. So too Jesus Christ will go to great pains to search even in the tinniest places within a humble home to find that (believers) which belong to Him.
The woman had ten coins. Each silver coin representing a drachme, or one-fourth of a shekel, or about one days pay. It isn't a lot of money, but when you misplace a days pay then again, a sensible person would search the house inside and out, checking purses, pockets, drawers, under, inside, and behind furniture, and so forth in order to find it.
If you are extremely wealthy, then you might forget it since it is not that big of a deal. But if you are poor, then losing a days pay (for a day laborer) means a great deal to you.
But here we have a small coin. A silver coin, which represents the soul of the believer. It becomes lost, and God does not take on an apathetic attitude toward it, but searches the house thoroughly in order to recover it.
He lights a lamp. He checks very carefully behind every obstacle, around every corner, inside every crevice. He leaves not even a square inch of space untouched, such is the thoroughness of His search. He searches continually and never relinquishes His search, until He finds the lost coin. Failure in this venture is not an option. Quitting is not an alternative. Forgetting is never considered. The coin exists, therefore it 'will' be found. Since it exists, then it has to be some place. That leaves only the question of finding that location.
If all locations are searched meticulously, then the coin will for certain be recovered.
This is the lost coin parable. The soul is the silver coin of intrinsic value. It is not metal, not lead, not wood. Its value never diminishes even tough the coin might be buried in the mud.
Believers are lost coins, though they each might be of little value by themselves, God is so responsible in preserving that which belongs to Him, that He searches thoroughly and never gives up until the lost is recovered.
God expends a great deal of energy and effort in our behalf. Though we are but useless red dust. Adam which you will recall from our Genesis study means red dust. And Adam was made out of the red dust which was from outside of the Garden. He was not created or formed inside the Garden. The dust outside was useless and had no value whatsoever.
So we are vessels of dust. We are useless and worthless, yet God has given us worth from His perspective in that we (as believers) have taken Him up on His promise (something He saw us do when viewing down the tunnel of time from eternity past) of salvation and a life with Him in heaven for all of eternity. Seeing us believe, we were thus foreordained, predestined, elected by God in eternity past.
That made us members of the flock prior to history, and then God allowed history to unfold so that we, in time, could fulfill our faith belief in Him, making our salvation a reality and a historical event fulfilling the divine decrees as they were laid out in eternity past.
Were it not for the faith of people in time, then there would have been no history worth fulfilling. But billions of people throughout history have believed and that causes God to fulfill His promises to all for salvation and a great eternal life thereafter.
God goes to great pains in time in order to bring all those who will believe in Him, into His fold. Because of this, do we not also owe something back to God? And that of course gets us into the entire of Bible study and the responsibilities that each believer owes to God. Hummm! Does anyone know of a check list or guideline or something that might be of use?
