Chapter 5 - Dragnet
Dragnet
Matt. 13:47-49
47 Again [palin] , the kingdom [basileia] of heaven [ouranos] is [esti] like [homoios] unto a net [sagene] , that was cast [ballo] into [eis] the sea [thalassa] , and [kai] gathered [sunago] of [ek] every [pas] kind [genos] :
48 Which [hos] , when [hote] it was full [pleroo] , they drew [anabibazo] to [epi] shore [aigialos] , and [kai] sat down [kathizo] , and gathered [sullego] the good [kalos] into [eis] vessels [aggeion] , but [de] cast [ballo] the bad [sapros] away [exo] .
49 So [houto] shall it be [esomai] at [en] the end [sunteleia] of the world [aion] : the angels [aggelos] shall come forth [exerchomai] , and [kai] sever [aphorizo] the wicked [poneros] from [ek] among [mesos] the just [dikaios] , KJV-Interlinear
47 'Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind; 48 and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down, and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away. 49 'So it will be at the end of the age; the angels shall come forth, and take out the wicked from among the righteous, NASB
The warning is again stated. There will be an end to human history. Mans status in this universe will not go on and on forever allowing man to fly to the stars and explore new frontiers. There is a definite plan and it has a definite end.
Just as life has a beginning (birth) and an end (death), so too, human history will have a definite end just as it had a definite beginning (Adam - none of this evolution nonsense).
God has a very large fishing net. That net is His plan. There are three types of fishing used in the scriptures. The line and hook, Matt. 17:24-27, the small one man net, Matt. 4:18-19, and the very large drag net, which is in view here in our current passage.
God casts the net out over humanity and catches all of human history. In the end (of human history) the net will be drawn in and angels will be used to sort out the good fish from the bad. They will collect all of the bad fish (unbelievers) and cast them into the lake of fire. Angels will execute the final judgment against all unbelievers from history. This of course follows the last and final Great White Throne judgment where all unbelievers have their last review and sentencing.
In the previous parables, the wheat and the tares are believers and unbelievers coexisting in life throughout history. All are given a chance and all the necessary information to make their choice for eternal life or eternal misery. In the fishing net all have the freedom to swim around through life. All come into contact with the net (Gods Plan) and some recognize its meaning and respond properly with faith in Christ. Some react to the net and swim away, rejecting Gods plan. They have the freedom to swim where they may and may feel free from God, but they are all contained within the net (Gods plan) and cannot escape it. Sooner or later the net will be drawn in (termination of history).
History terminates for humanity as a whole at the end of the Millennium. But history also terminates for each one of us when we die. We have as long as we are alive on this earth, to make a decision for or against God. God always gives many chances, but tempting God is not a good practice. Sooner or later He will pull the plug on your life and you may not expect death when it arrives. Once you die, your chances are all over. Better to make the decision to believe in Jesus Christ now and get that part of your life behind you.
Jesus repeats this warning because of its great importance. We do not know the hour or manner of our death. Some will die in a plane crash. Some will slip in the bath tub. Some will choke on a piece of food. Some will have a stroke. The possibilities of meeting ones death are virtually endless. You may not even wake up tomorrow morning. So if you have not received Christ as your Savior, then you need to do so right now. 'Father, I believe in Jesus Christ.' Those six little words addressed to God the Father, are all that are necessary to be saved and therefore escape the lake of fire, and secure a place in heaven.
Once saved you become a good fish and are in the good sort, when the net of history is drawn in. Unbelievers do not make the good sort, but are discarded as worthless and are burned in the eternal fires where there will be terrible fear, torments, pains, sufferings, total separation from God. That is not a good thing.
