Chapter 2 - Dinner - Compassion

Luke 14:3-6

3 And [kai] Jesus [Iesous] answering [apokrinomai] spake [epo] unto [pros] the lawyers [nomikos] and [kai] Pharisees [Pharisaios] , saying [lego] , Is it [ei] lawful [exesti] to heal [therapeuo] on the sabbath day [sabbaton] ?
4 And [de] they held their peace [hesuchazo] . And [kai] he took [epilambanomai] him, and healed [iaomai] him [autos] , and [kai] let him go [apoluo] ;
5 And [kai] answered [apokrinomai] them [pros] [autos] , saying [epo] , Which [tis] of you [humon] shall have an ass [onos] or [e] an ox [bous] fallen [empipto] into [eis] a pit [phrear] , and [kai] will [anaspao] not [ou] straightway [eutheos] pull [anaspao] him [autos] out [anaspao] on [en] the sabbath [sabbaton] day [hemera] ?
6 And [kai] they could [ischuo] not [ou] answer [antapokrinomai] him [autos] again [antapokrinomai] to [pros] these things [tauta] . KJV-Interlinear

3 And Jesus answered and spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, 'Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?' 4 But they kept silent. And He took hold of him, and healed him, and sent him away. 5 And He said to them, 'Which one of you shall have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?' 6 And they could make no reply to this. NASB

Jesus disarms the Pharisees and all the onlookers with a simple question. 'Is it unlawful to do good?' This is the jest of the question. And beyond that question is a deeper meaning. 'Is it unlawful to help someone who is in pain, someone who is near death, someone who is in jeopardy of their life, and without help, they would surely die?

Who would walk away from or ignore, someone who obviously needed help, and their need was obviously great.

The answer is obvious as well. Of course the right thing to do is to help, especially if you have the means of helping.

Jesus poses another question in the last part of this passage. He asks whether or not anyone would help if one of their animals fell into a well. The word for 'son' is really the animal. This question places their real values. Is not the worth of a man greater than that of an animal?

Again, that answer should be obvious, but then in our present day we have environmentalists who will place animals above the needs or welfare, of people.

The Pharisees held the value of their property as more important to them than the people whom they were supposed to be serving. Of course they looked at the people as their servants, rather than they as the peoples servants.

The negative person has many flaws. He is prejudiced against people. The Pharisees brought in a person that otherwise would never have been allowed to set foot in the Pharisees house. They use people. They had no concern for the sick man. His condition was merely a convenient tool for trapping Jesus into breaking their regulatory law. They placed value for their manmade laws over the needs of the human condition. The placed the value of animals over that of a human life.

They were hypocritical, prejudiced, duplicitous. They did not intend to be taught or informed by Jesus, but to gain evidence in order to inform against Him

With a simple question, Jesus totally disarmed the Pharisees, the crowd, and then in less than a moment He exercised divine power and healed the man of a deadly disease, totally, and the man went away in perfect health.

Who among them could do such a miracle? Who among them realized the magnitude of Jesus' power? Who among them began to have second thoughts as to just what they expected to gain by persecuting Jesus? Who among them began to reconsider their own position?

Well, that answer lies in the next parable. End of Lesson
