16 But [de] their [autos] eyes [ophthalmos] were holden [krateo] that they should [epiginosko] not [me] know [epiginosko] him [autos] .
17 And [de] he said [epo] unto [pros] them [autos] , What [tis] manner of communications [logos] are these [houtos] that [hos] ye have [antiballo] one to [pros] another [allelon] , as ye walk [peripateo] , and [kai] are [este] sad [skuthropos] ?
18 And [de] the one of them [heis] , whose [hos] name [onoma] was Cleopas [Kleopas] , answering [apokrinomai] said [epo] unto [pros] him [autos] , Art thou [su] only [monos] a stranger [paroikeo] in [en] Jerusalem [Hierousalem] , and [kai] hast [ginosko] not [ou] known [ginosko] the things which are come to pass [ginomai] there [en] [autos] in [en] these [tautais] days [hemera] ?
19 And [kai] he said [epo] unto them [autos] , What things [poios] ? 13 And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they were conversing with each other about all these things which had taken place. 15 And it came about that while they were conversing and discussing, Jesus Himself approached, and began traveling with them. 16 But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. 17 And He said to them, 'What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?' And they stood still, looking sad. 18 And one of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, 'Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?' 19 And He said to them, 'What things?' And they said to Him, 'The things about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him up to the sentence of death, and crucified Him. 21 'But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. 22 'But also some women among us amazed us. When they were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that He was alive. 24 'And some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see.' 25 And He said to them, 'O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 'Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?' 27 And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. NASB

Mark 16:12
12 And after that, He appeared in a different form to two of them, while they were walking along on their way to the country. NASB

The third appearance of Jesus Christ occurs when two of the disciples leave the group and go along their way to Emmaus, a small village about seven miles from Jerusalem. Emmaus means wells, or medicinal springs. It is a place where people go for the healing powers of the water there.

Christ is the living word, the eternal waters of eternal life, and yet these men who have been witness to the most remarkable event in all of human history, are heading to a town where there is nothing but water bubbling up out of the ground. They have the scriptures, the written word. That which can heal anything (spiritually). And the spiritual healing can often overflow to the physical if that is Gods will.

They are walking along. They are sad and sorrowful. Then Jesus walks up alongside of them and asks them what they are talking about. They are preoccupied with their sadness and they do not recognize Jesus. When we are preoccupied with something other that Gods Word, then we often will not recognize it even if it is right there inside our soul.

The verses state that Jesus prevented them from seeing Him for who He really was, but we know that God never prevents us intentionally from seeing truth. They in fact prevented themselves because they were caught up in the world more so than with God. This is a common barrier for us all and this is why many folks do not advance in their spiritual lives. They emphasize the day to day things of their lives, rather than the requirements of their spiritual growth.

They ask Him if He has been off the planet and just got back, 'Are you a stranger here? Don't you know of the events of these past few days?' This also makes it quite clear that the whole region was aware of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and of who caused it - the chief priests and the elders of Judea.

Jesus will throw that question right back at them when He asks them why they do not understand the scriptures. 'Don't you know the scriptures? Don't you know what the prophets said of the Christ?'

They explain what they have been talking about and that is when Jesus throws the question of ignorance right back in their face. He then proceeds to give them a lesson in the scriptures. The birth of the Christ, the suffering of the Christ, the resurrection of the Christ.

The following are just a few of the verses that He certainly went over with them. There are many more, but I can't list them here otherwise we would be listing the entire Bible.

NASB

Num. 24:17

Psa. 22:14-18

They look, they stare at me; 18 They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots. NASB

Isa. 7:14
14 'Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. NASB

Isa. 50:6

Isa. 53
1 Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. 3 He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face, He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living, For the transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due? 9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
10 But the LORD was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand. 11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors. NASB

Isa. 61:1
1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives, And freedom to prisoners; NASB

Jer. 23:5
5 'Behold, the days are coming,' declares the LORD, 'When I shall raise up for David a righteous Branch; NASB

Ezek. 34:23
23 'Then I will set over them one shepherd, My servant David, and he will feed them; he will feed them himself and be their shepherd. NASB

Mic. 5:2-4
2 'But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.' 3 Therefore, He will give them up until the time When she who is in labor has borne a child. Then the remainder of His brethren Will return to the sons of Israel. 4 And He will arise and shepherd His flock In the strength of the LORD, NASB

Zech. 6:12-13
12 'Then say to him, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts,' Behold, a man whose name is Branch, for He will branch out from where He is; and He will build the temple of the LORD. 13 'Yes, it is He who will build the temple of the LORD, and He who will bear the honor and sit and rule on His throne. Thus, He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices. NASB

Zech. 9:9
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey. NASB

Zech. 12:10
10 'And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him, like the bitter weeping over a first-born. NASB

Zech. 13:7
7 'Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, And against the man, My Associate,' Declares the LORD of hosts. 'Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered; And I will turn My hand against the little ones. NASB

Mal. 3:1
1 'Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,' says the LORD of hosts. NASB

Mal. 4:1-2
2 'But for you who fear My name the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall. NASB

There are many, many more verses which apply, but this is only to prove a point. We have been studying our Bible daily for many years now. How many are guilty of ignorance just as the disciples were guilty of not knowing that which they should have known.

Too many people read their Bibles, go to church or study classes. They do these things regularly, or not so regularly, but the point here is why do not more people advance to spiritual maturity. We here in the United States are about 80% Christian, according to a newspaper article I saw a short time ago. That explains our prominence in the world. Less than 5% of the worlds population and producing more than a third of its prosperity.

But we all know that we have our problems. Politics are our best measure of the nations spiritual status. Our country is nearly split 50/50 between conservative and liberal thought. Now realize that just being conservative does not equate to your being spiritually in line with Gods will. Nor does being liberal make a person automatically a spiritual grunt.

The politics of our day point to a large portion of our population as being in varying degrees of indifference to Bible doctrine. But because we are a very prosperous nation, that points to a very large portion of our population as being followers of economic, moral, and just plain good common sense, despite the many split differences of opinion that exist.

The principle here is, that our life does not depend on economics, or politics, or social values or anything else in this world. Those things will change with the weather. Our dependence should be on God and that comes through our knowledge, comprehension, understanding, and wisdom derived from the study of His Word.

Our daily study should include our pondering of what it is we are studying. What it means to us in our life now and in the next life. What our responsibilities are, and what expectations God has of each one of us.

Too often people become preoccupied with their daily life in the worldly sense. Education, job, social life, retirement, hobbies, vacation, entertainment, whatever. And Gods Word is left on the shelf. That is where the greatest failure in life occurs.

We, each on of us, can become so much more if we will only get with a program of daily Bible study, learning, and growing up, maintaining our fellowship status and applying what we learn to our daily life (responsibility to God, self, and to others).

But again, how many will agree, nod their heads and then forget all of these words when they get to the end of the page?

The history of mankind did not happen by accident. Your life span is not an accident. Your destiny in eternity is not some vague concept over which you have no control. You have every opportunity to make your next birth (into eternity) into your greatest possible life (one that will last trillions and trillions of years and more). You did not have any control over the circumstances of your birth into this world, but you do have an opportunity to define your circumstances in the next life.

If someone told you that you could become a multi-billionaire next year if you will only read a, b, and c, or you would not be very wealthy if you did, d, e, and f, then which choice would you make? Yet most people hustle after the second option. Does that make sense?

Your choice is always before you until the day you die. Then it will be too late.
