Six Trials
Matt. 26:59-61

59 Now [de] the chief priests [archiereus] , and [kai] elders [presbuteros] , and [kai] all [holos] the council [sunedrion] , sought [zeteo] false witness [pseudomarturia] against [kata] Jesus [Iesous] , to [hopos] put [thanatoo] him [autos] to death [thanatoo] ;
60 But [kai] found [heurisko] none [ou] : yea [kai] , though many [polus] false witnesses [pseudomartur] came [proserchomai] , yet found they [heurisko] none [ou] . [de] At the last [husteron] came [proserchomai] two [duo] false witnesses [pseudomartur] ,
61 And said [epo] , This [houtos] fellow said [phemi] , I am able [dunamai] to destroy [kataluo] the temple [naos] of God [theos] , and [kai] to build [oikodomeo] it [autos] in [dia] three [treis] days [hemera] . KJV-Interlinear

59 Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, in order that they might put Him to death; 60 and they did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two came forward, 61 and said, 'This man stated, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.'' NASB

Now we note that the Sanhedrin, the whole council, is present with Caiaphas. This is the body which is supposed to sit in judgment of an accused, and hear the evidence presented. They hear evidence which has already been gathered by a prosecutor. They listen to witnesses. They then hear the defense of an accused and then they decide on an outcome - guilt or innocence.

There is no prosecutor present. There are no charges made.

These men are full of hate, and have already decided an outcome, they just have to gather together facts sufficient to support their decision.

They are judges, yet they are seeking to contrive evidence, and in Matthew and in Mark we see that the false witnesses who brought their stories before them, were even inconsistent among themselves.

Mark 14:56
56 For many were giving false testimony against Him, and yet their testimony was not consistent. NASB

So the Sanhedrin who is gathered together in the wee hours of the morning (before dawn), have conveniently arrested Jesus, and have conveniently collected witnesses against him. Of course these are obvious made up witnesses, since their stories were lies in the first place, but even those contrivances were not coordinated well, for they were inconsistent.

In a formal court of law, they would be dismissed as no evidence, since they (the stories) were inconsistent with each other.

Then later on, still in the wee hours, two came forward (conveniently) and testified that Jesus said He would destroy the Temple and then rebuild it in three days.. What Jesus actually said is in Jn. 2:19

John 2:19
19 Jesus answered and said to them, 'Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.' NASB

What these two witnesses said were, here in Matthew, 'This man stated, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.' And then the other witness said, Mark 14:58-59, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.'' 59 And not even in this respect was their testimony consistent.' NASB

And even Mark points out that these two accounts were inconsistent.

The entire assembly comes up with nothing that they can legitimately use in a valid court of law. They are neither interested in justice, though they are sworn to uphold the values and principles of justice, and they are not interested nor concerned with their efforts to distort every moral principle of truth and due process in order to obtain what they want - the death of Jesus.

We know that there are many onlookers - angels. Among them would be demons (fallen angels) following Satan. Even Satan would be present. They have seen Jesus' entire life, and if there were any flaw, any sin, any imperfection, any defect in His life, then they would know of it and that flaw would come out.

We have a trial for two reasons. First the obvious one is that these men hated Jesus and wanted to get rid of Him, but in a seemingly public legitimate way. He threatened their way of life. We have already studied that. But more important, Jesus is being held up under intense scrutiny and examination to determine whether He is qualified to go to the Cross.

This examination is for our benefit. Were it not for the obvious injustices of this exam, then we would only have Gods Word that Jesus was perfect. Of course many of us would naturally accept that, but Satan is a picky creature. Satan will leave nothing unturned in order to find something that will prove Jesus an invalid sacrifice. You see, Satan knows exactly what is going on, and he wants to prove to the world that Jesus is not qualified.

So they ridicule, push, shove, beat, taunt, tease, and lie in an attempt to draw out some form of emotional reaction from Jesus. Anything to make Him crack or strike back. Satan just wants Jesus to commit one sin. The elders, chief priests, and so forth just want something with which they can incriminate him so they can legitimately execute Him.

He does none of these.

Jesus had been up all day from the previous day and all night. He must be tired, exhausted (physically speaking). Mankind is at his greatest weakness when tired, exhausted. Jesus is 100% human and as such will suffer the typical human physical weaknesses. Later we will see that He will be unable to carry the Cross and will need help. Exhaustion.

Yet despite all of this, He does not crack, does not strike back, does not falter even once. He won't even cry out when the nails are driven through Him.
