Betrayal and Arrest
Matt. 26:50-56

50 And [de] Jesus [Iesous] said [epo] unto him [autos] , Friend [hetairos] , wherefore [epi] [hos] art thou come [pareimi] ? Then [tote] came they [proserchomai] , and laid [epiballo] hands [cheir] on [epi] Jesus [Iesous] , and [kai] took [krateo] him [autos] .
51 And [kai] , behold [idou] , one [heis] of them which were with [meta] Jesus [Iesous] stretched out [ekteino] his hand [cheir] , and drew [apospao] his [autos] sword [machaira] , and [kai] struck [patasso] a servant [doulos] of the high priest's [archiereus] , and smote off [aphaireo] his [autos] ear [otion] .
52 Then [tote] said [lego] Jesus [Iesous] unto him [autos] , Put up again [apostrepho] thy [sou] sword [machaira] into [eis] his [autos] place [topos] : for [gar] all they [pas] that take [lambano] the sword [machaira] shall perish [apollumi] with [en] the sword [machaira] .
53 [e] Thinkest thou [dokeo] that [hoti] I cannot [ou] [dunamai] now [arti] pray [parakaleo] to my [mou] Father [pater] , and [kai] he shall presently give [paristemi] me [moi] more [pleion] than [e] twelve [dodeka] legions [legeon] of angels [aggelos] ?
54 But how [pos] then [oun] shall the scriptures [graphe] be fulfilled [pleroo] , that [hoti] thus [houto] it must [dei] be [ginomai] ?
55 In [en] that same [ekeinos] hour [hora] said [epo] Jesus [Iesous] to the multitudes [ochlos] , Are ye come out [exerchomai] as [hos] against [epi] a thief [lestes] with [meta] swords [machaira] and [kai] staves [xulon] for to take [sullambano] me [me] ? I sat [kathezomai] daily [hemera] [kata] with [pros] you [humas] teaching [didasko] in [en] the temple [hieron] , and [kai] ye laid [krateo] no [ou] hold [krateo] on me [me] .
56 But [de] all [holos] this [touto] was done [ginomai] , that [hina] the scriptures [graphe] of the prophets [prophetes] might be fulfilled [pleroo] . Then [tote] all [pas] the disciples [mathetes] forsook [aphiemi] him [autos] , and fled [pheugo] . KJV-Interlinear

50 And Jesus said to him, 'Friend, do what you have come for.' Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached and drew out his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, 'Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 'Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 'How then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen this way?' 55 At that time Jesus said to the multitudes, 'Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56 'But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.' Then all the disciples left Him and fled. NASB

The typical word used for 'friend' is 'philos' But Jesus uses 'hetairos' which is a general term meaning people or folks. If you lived in the south then you would say 'Yall.' So he said to the group in general, and not to any one individual, 'People, just do what you have to do.'

They seized Him, and that is when Peter reacted with emotion and tried to cut off the head of the servant of the High Priest. He of course missed and got only an ear.

Jesus immediately healed the ear and then scolded Peter. 'Put your sword away. I could call for 72,000 fighting angels if I wanted them, but that is not My mission today.'

A legion is 6000 strong, and twelve of them adds up to 72,000.

Jesus was not without resources if they were needed. But there is a plan. He states the need for the scriptures to be fulfilled, otherwise all of history is for nothing.

Man fell in the garden. Man disobeyed God and that was the sin which got us into all of this trouble. Now we have an out. We have a way to free ourselves from the bonds of sin and its prison, death.

Sin is a separation from God. God hold all things together in this universe. He is the glue by which all things are held together. When we become separated from God, then we reject that glue and think that we have a better glue for defining the universe and holding it together.

Now who among us can measure the soul? Who among us can even detect it? Who among us can remove the soul of an individual from one body and put it into another body. Yet that is exactly what will happen when we receive our resurrection bodies. We will be transformed in an instant at the Rapture, and all those who have died prior to the Rapture, will be brought back and placed into new resurrection bodies.

Who among us can cure the common cold? Who among us can prevent his own death? Who among us can do anything that lies beyond this physical realm? And that answer should be obvious. None of us can.

Now death comes and that is a second separation from this life. Out of body, and out of this realm, we would be helpless, immobile, without any contact with God until He brings us back for our final judgment.
Pretend you were injured in an accident. You are blinded, your hearing gone, your paralyzed totally, you cannot speak, yet you are alive laying in some hospital bed being waited on hand and foot by someone whom you aren't even aware of. You don't know if you are alone or if someone is there. You cannot even sense your feedings. That is as close as you could come to being alive and know what it would be like to be separated from God.

And yet many people play games with their life by rejecting God, and flirting with this type of life forever into eternity.

Jesus came here to prevent that. So who is Peter and just what is he thinking when he tried to defend Jesus. Noble thought, but stupid. Human good may be noble in our own minds, but when it runs contrary to Gods will for life, then it is utterly stupid.

The chief priests saw Jesus in the Temple day after day. They even had a warrant out for His arrest. Recall the gossip of the streets we studied many lessons ago. If anyone should know of His whereabouts, they should contact the Temple police, etc., etc., etc. And of course everyone knew exactly where Jesus was. Just follow the crowds to Bethany and to the Temple, and along the road between the two.

The chief priests, the Pharisees, the elders, the Sadducees, the scribes, all who were in league against Jesus, all could have done something before the Passover. They all knew full well that once the Holy Days of the Feast of the Unleaven Bread began, that all civil and criminal matters would be put on hold until after the feasts had been concluded.

Remember that the Passover is a one day feast which is immediately followed by a six day Feast of Unleaven Bread. Matters could be concluded during the Passover day, but not beyond evening when the next six day feast began at sunset.

Note that in mans mind, the six day feast was more important that the single day feast of Passover. The number six of course refers to man (Adam was created on the sixth day), and the seven days of celebration refer to the conclusion of the work of God.

Now, all things happen for as reason. In this case, nothing happened until exactly the right moment in history (Passover night), such that those who deemed themselves in charge could rally their forces, try Jesus in six different courts, and then being rushed because of the Feast schedule, will have Him crucified in the afternoon of Passover day, during those three hours when on every afternoon of Passover day, every year, for thousands of years, the sacrifices took place.

The feast schedule was not an accident, Judas' noticing the habit of Jesus going to the garden was not an accident. Yet without any coercion from God, mankind came to its lowest point from its own volition and tried to kill God. The quintessence of stupidity. And God allowed all of this to occur so that the scriptures would be fulfilled. All things work together for good.

Now the last part of our last verse - exit the apostles. They are just called the disciples which means merely students. They have a lot to learn, but then don't we all!
