Betrayal and Arrest
John 18:2-3

2 And [de] Judas [Ioudas] also [kai] , which [ho] betrayed [paradidomi] him [autos] , knew [eido] the place [topos] : for [hoti] Jesus [Iesous] ofttimes [pollakis] resorted [sunago] thither [ekei] with [meta] his [autos] disciples [mathetes] .
3 Judas [Ioudas] then [oun] , having received [lambano] a band [speira] of men and [kai] officers [huperetes] from [ek] the chief priests [archiereus] and [kai] Pharisees [Pharisaios] , cometh [erchomai] thither [ekei] with [meta] lanterns [phanos] and [kai] torches [lampas] and [kai] weapons [hoplon] . KJV-Interlinear

2 Now Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place; for Jesus had often met there with His disciples. 3 Judas then, having received the Roman cohort, and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. NASB

We have already seen how Jesus Christ controls history. He went to the garden with such repetition and on certain occasions, that would allow Judas to see the pattern, and consequently realize that, that was the place to make the arrest. The opportunity would be concealed in darkness. The crowds would be light if at all. It was outside the city, thus the city of peace, representative of the mature state of spiritual maturity, was not violated when the arrest occurred.

Though the trials will occur within the city, this is the active rejection of Jesus Christ by the ruler of the world, Satan, and the active rejection of Christ by man. Man pursuing his 'better' course of life rather than accepting that which Jesus Christ offered.

Interesting to note that within forty years, everyone alive in the city at this time (ruler wise), will be dead. So much for their 'better way.

Judas once stood with Christ. He was with Him for three years plus. Just by being in the presence of doctrine and truth is not enough. There has to be an active interest, a genuine desire to want to learn, and then an active program for learning before one can begin to grow up spiritually.

The other eleven, likewise, were with Christ for the same three plus years. They had the basic foundation of knowledge of the Messiah, but they just got the details of the first advent mixed up with the later return of Christ. The gap, between which, the Old Testament prophets could not figure out. That gap we of course now know as the Church Age.

Even with a positive attitude toward God, there needs to be an open mindedness and an acceptance of truth, not a substitution of human preference replacing Gods plan. The apostles wanted things to be a certain way. They even fought and argued, as recently as the last supper, over who among them was to be the greater in the Kingdom which they saw as coming now.

In the garden they slept as though the night were no different than any other.

Judas went to the place of evil, guided by the pattern of Satan, not guided by Satan. As we have seen in Matthew, Satan was in the garden bringing intense pressure on Christ, seeking His failure, thus attempting to discredit His qualification as the impeccable offering.

Judas once stood with the most powerful individual in the universe and beyond. Now He chose to stand with evil, the least powerful force which is also doomed to oblivion.

Jesus Christ could have called out 12 legions of angels. We know that in full force, a legion consisted of 6000 soldiers. So a little math makes that 72,000 of the fiercest fighting warriors in existence. And all stood at the ready and would respond instantly at Christ's command. And not only that, because they were invisible to mankind, they would prove extremely lethal.

Judas came with perhaps 1000 people. A mixture of soldiers, police, and dignitaries. A battle between the force of Judas and the force of Christ would be short to say the least. Furthermore, Christ is God, and He could have merely 'thought' His enemies away. Yet He did not.

The apostles did not understand the significance of the time. They were focusing on themselves. The chief priests and all that were with them, did not understand the significance of the time. They were focusing on their own agendas, caring nothing for the better good of mankind.

Only Jesus Christ understood what was about to play out.

They came with lanterns, torches and weapons. All items of limited use. Jesus Christ had the power of God and Gods word. Infinitely greater than all weapons on planet earth in its entire history, combined.
