Need for Departure
John 16:8-11

8 And [kai] when he is come [erchomai] , he [ekeinos] will reprove [elegcho] the world [kosmos] of [peri] sin [hamartia] , and [kai] of [peri] righteousness [dikaiosune] , and [kai] of [peri] judgment [krisis] :
9 Of [peri] sin [hamartia] , [men] because [hoti] they believe [pisteuo] not [ou] on [eis] me [eme] ;
10 Of [peri] [de] righteousness [dikaiosune] , because [hoti] I go [hupago] to [pros] my [mou] Father [pater] , and [kai] ye see [theoreo] me [me] no more [ouketi] ;
11 Of [peri] [de] judgment [krisis] , because [hoti] the prince [archon] of this [toutou] world [kosmos] is judged [krino] . KJV-Interlinear

8 'And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. NASB

Among the many functions of the Holy Spirit, He is sent into this world by Christ, from the Father as we have already studied, for the purpose of dealing with the issues of sin, righteousness, and judgment, as spelled out in these verses.

In an earlier study we have already seen that the Holy Spirit, the Son, and the Father are all working from the same game plan. None of them are working toward their own end not toward their own empire at the expense of the other two. There is no conflict within the Godhead. There is prefect harmony.

As for sin. The Holy Spirit enters the scene after the Cross to convict and to convince humanity with regard to sin. Man is not perfect. That should be obvious at least to most. Two more truths should also be obvious. The first is that we who are alive have been born. And the second is that we who are alive will one day die. Thus we have a desperate situation in that after death we have no more control over the where and when and what of our life.

There is a higher power running this universe and we can align with that power (God) by means of His policy, or we can ignore that power and thus align alongside of 'no power.' That will send us into oblivion - forever. The second choice is not a good choice needless to say.

The Holy Spirit convicts of sin. That is, He exposes the facts of reality. Then He convinces of the truth. That is, He offers the opportunity out of our desperate situation - faith in Christ.

For those who believe in Christ, there is confidence of an eternal life in heaven. For those who reject His (the Holy Spirits) ministry there is eternal absence from God. We generally call that eternal condemnation. The very nature of sin stands revealed, the leprosy of it will come out on the smiling self-complacency of the world. No longer will the world be able to blame Adam or Satan for its transgressions, but will render itself personally liable for its own decisions. Thus, there will be no excuse.

As for righteousness. Only God is perfect righteousness. That is, God is pure in that He is free from any form of flaw or defect. Only God could qualify for the Cross, and only God could survive and recover from that sacrifice.

That Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father. That He has left this world, never to return for another round of sacrifices, is proof that all sin has been judged, that God the Father has accepted Christ's work, because no sinful thing would be allowed to sit down beside the Father in heaven.

Satan once the holder of the highest rank in heaven, is dethroned and replaced by Christ and the Royal Family, who are in union with Christ. The Chief priests and elders of Judea rejected Jesus as unrighteous, thinking themselves as righteous, however the reverse is true. No human being has ever defeated death and brought himself back from the dead. Jesus Christ was raised up after three days in the grave, and then ascended into heaven.

Satan has been judged. This is past tense. Since before man was created, Satan was judged, therefore the history of the angelic rebellion was all prior to mans advent into history. Satan, already judged, has not yet received the execution of his sentence. Man is the convincing conclusion of what Satan stood for, and of Gods superior wisdom.

Thus we now have the facts of life before us. We can either subscribe to the pattern which has been left to us by Satan, or we can subscribe to the pattern of truth left to us by God. All the objective facts, all the teaching of example, all the thunder of prophecy, all the outward demonstration of sin, righteousness, and judgment, now render us without excuse with regard to our spiritual lives.
