Truth and Confusion
Luke 22:14-15

14 And [kai] when [hote] the hour [hora] was come [ginomai] , he sat down [anapipto] , and [kai] the twelve [dodeka] apostles [apostolos] with [sun] him [autos] .

14 And when the hour had come He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15 And He said to them, 'I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; NASB

Now we turn to Luke to complete the picture of the apostles mental state, and of how things in general were just prior to the crucifixion.

We'll get more to the apostles state of mind when we get to verse 24, but first we need to restart our study at the beginning of the evening dinner which is Passover.

Recall that Passover is a one day celebration. It begins at evening time, when all Jewish new days begin and the former day ends. This happens to be Tuesday evening. The Passover celebration will occur on the following day, Wednesday, when precisely at noon, all sacrifices will begin and continue for three hours until their completion. This is how Passover has been celebrated for 1500 years.

The first passover, saw the Israelites in Egypt under the thumb of the Egyptians. On this night they (the Israelites) were told to slaughter their lambs, to paint their doors with the blood of the lambs, to remain dressed ready to travel at a moments notice, and to eat their evening meal while standing and dressed for travel. When the call came to them, they were to move out immediately. There would be no time for packing once the call to move out, came. They were to be prepared.

On the other side of the table so to speak, saw the Egyptians, dressed and ready for battle. They waited for the light of dawn, because their orders were to go out and take the first born of the Israelites to once and for all quash this rebellion and plagues that they had endured over the recent weeks.

They were well aware of the precautions that the Israelites were taking (blood on the doors) and that this night would see the final plague from the God of Israel, as foolish as it might sound, so the Egyptians were on their guard.

Now we are some 1500 years later. Jesus is reclining at the table along with the other apostles. A more leisurely posture. No one is at risk like they were at the first Passover, and there is no need for painting the door posts with the blood of the lambs that folks were having for their evening meal.

The God of heaven was present at the table with the apostles and it was He who was in jeopardy if you could even call it that. On the next day, the main event of world history was about to take place. It was not the design of humans or angels, but was planned by God in eternity past and it was to this precise point in time that all of history was destined to reach.

Jesus makes yet again another reference to His impending suffering. It was for this reason that He came into the world, to become a substitute for mankind and to take upon himself the punishment for the sins of the entire human race. Jesus earnestly 'desired' this Passover dinner. He was not in the least bit worried because of the events that would take place on the following day. He expected them. He was not fearful, nor concerned that something might go wrong. He was not concerned for His own safety (He is God you know and God cannot suffer). But as man, He was going to subject Himself to the suffering called for by the justice of God, to vanquish totally and completely the price for all transgressions in sin.

This alone would open up the door for His plan to allow any who believed in Him to gain a relationship with God and to live with Him forever as opposed to living in total isolation from God forever (the Lake of Fire).

Only one more Passover was to be celebrated, and then once the reality of the one and only sacrifice, which would have meaning and purpose in history, had taken place, then there would be no further need to celebrate that which had been promised, but now there would be a new covenant of remembrance and of victory in the angelic conflict.

Jesus longed to celebrate this final Passover with the apostles, because this was the 'last' Passover. All of the promises, all of the teaching that had taken place over the centuries. All of the anticipation of the end of this phase of the angelic conflict was about to come to pass. There was to be no more waiting. The heel of the Messiah was to be bruised. And then there would come His turn, in due course, to counter strike the serpent (Satan and all evil) and crush his head, forever.
