Service and Betrayal
John 13:10-11

10 Jesus [Iesous] saith [lego] to him [autos] , He that is washed [louo] needeth [chreia] not [ou] [echo] save [e] to wash [nipto] his feet [pous] , but [alla] is [esti] clean [katharos] every whit [holos] : and [kai] ye [humeis] are [este] clean [katharos] , but [alla] not [ouchi] all [pas] .
11 For [gar] he knew [eido] who [ho] should betray [paradidomi] him [autos] ; therefore [touto] [dia] said he [epo] , Ye are [este] not [ouchi] all [pas] clean [katharos] . KJV-Interlinear

10 Jesus said to him, 'He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.' 11 For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, 'Not all of you are clean.' NASB

Each person is washed twice in the spiritual life. The first washing is of the entire body as it were, which refers to salvation and our being delivered from the clutches of sin and death. Our soul is cleansed and freed from our slavery to sin and death. Salvation is represented by the washing of the body, and that is required only once in life. Once saved always saved

The second washing is not of the entire body as the illustration goes, but only of the feet. Our feet represent our daily activities in life. We come and go and our feet meet the ground regularly and get dirty. They need washing on a daily basis. This is representative of the confession procedure and the concept of fellowship.

Salvation and fellowship are two separate and distinct concepts. Once we are saved, we are born into the family of God. It only takes one birth to get into a family.

But after we are in the family, then we are expected to behave properly and in accordance with the rules of the house - Gods house.

When we sin, we are not in compliance with Gods rules of conduct, we are out of fellowship as it were. God requires us to confess, to Him, our errors, which is merely our acknowledgment of our failures.

If we refuse to confess then He will not receive us in His court. God will have nothing to do with sin, and when we fail we are associated with sin. We are dirty. Our feet are dirty. God will not allow us to enter into His presence with our dirty feet.

The confession in the spiritual realm is the washing process of our feet, or the washing away of sin in our life. God then forgives us and restores us back into fellowship. We have an online link up with God while in fellowship.

The fellowship concept applies to believers only. It does not apply to unbelievers. One must first be washed thoroughly (salvation through faith in Christ) before one can begin the foot washing exercise. If your whole body is filthy, then you can never get your feet clean. All of the washing in the world will never get your feet clean. The dirt from your whole body will continue to drip down on your feet.

Fellowship alone is not available to people for salvation. Only faith in Christ can wash the entire person.

Jesus refers also to the one (Judas) who was not clean, and his uncleanness will lead to the betrayal of Christ.

All uncleanness leads to the betrayal of God.

If a person does not believe in Christ then they betray God as well as themselves. Their wages for this lack of faith? The lake of fire.

If a person who has believed in Christ, then sins in their life and fails to confess and therefore fails to comply with Gods command to be clean, then they as believers in Christ betray Christ from within their spiritual life.

Often times we refer to this failure as either quenching the Holy Spirit, 1 Thes. 5:19, where a person is involved in human good, or we refer to it as grieving the Holy Spirit, Eph. 4:30 where the person is involved in sins in their various forms. Remember that the sin nature has two areas - the first, its area of strength which is human good, and the other is its area of weakness which is sin which ranges from lasciviousness on the one hand, to asceticism on the other.

Thus even believers will betray God if they refuse to 'fess-up' to their failures.

Just as the washing of the whole body (faith in Christ) is mandatory in order to be saved, then so too confession and residence in fellowship is mandatory in order to have a moment by moment, day by day, relationship with God in order to advance in the spiritual life.

If you refuse to believe in Christ, you will not be saved. If you refuse to confess to God you will not grow up spiritually. Why is that important? Because spiritual maturity is the ultimate goal of the believer in life.

Attaining spiritual maturity opens the door for blessings beyond imagination, and that is Gods desire for everyone of us. We can be stupid and conclude that we do not need those blessings, but then there are those in this world who figure that they do not need anything beyond the basics in life. I think you'll find them living out in the desert or in the mountains or somewhere isolated from humanity. At least in their own minds they think they are isolated, but no one can ever get away from God, and cannot define their own life apart from God. Only fools would believe in that approach to life.

Filth leads to degeneracy. Degeneracy is the decay of ones soul and that leads to all manner of problems in life for ones self and for others who become your victims.

So washing on a regular basis is mandatory. It is good for you. It is a courtesy to others, and it is commanded by God. The washing of ones soul, and the subsequent daily maintenance of your soul is mandatory in order to have a smoothly running and healthy soul.
