Lazarus Raised
John 11:28-32

28 And [kai] when she had [epo] so [tauta] said [epo] , she went her way [aperchomai] , and [kai] called [phoneo] Mary [Maria] her [autos] sister [adelphe] secretly [lathra] , saying [epo] , The Master [didaskalos] is come [pareimi] , and [kai] calleth for [phoneo] thee [se] .
29 As soon as [hos] she [ekeinos] heard [akouo] that, she arose [egeiro] quickly [tachu] , and [kai] came [erchomai] unto [pros] him [autos] .
30 Now [de] Jesus [Iesous] was [erchomai] not yet [oupo] come [erchomai] into [eis] the town [kome] , but [alla] was [en] in [en] that place [topos] where [hopou] Martha [Martha] met [hupantao] him [autos] .
31 The Jews [Ioudaios] then [oun] which [ho] were [on] with [meta] her [autos] in [en] the house [oikia] , and [kai] comforted [paramutheomai] her [autos] , when they saw [eido] Mary [Maria] , that [hoti] she rose up [anistemi] hastily [tacheos] and [kai] went out [exerchomai] , followed [akoloutheo] her [autos] , saying [lego] , [hoti] She goeth [hupago] unto [eis] the grave [mnemeion] to [hina] weep [klaio] there [ekei] .
32 Then [oun] when [hos] Mary [Maria] was come [erchomai] where [hopou] Jesus [Iesous] was [en] , and saw [eido] him [autos] , she fell down [pipto] at [eis] his [autos] feet [pous] , saying [lego] unto him [autos] , Lord [kurios] , if [ei] thou hadst been [en] here [hode] , my [mou] brother [adelphos] had [an] not [ou] died [apothnesko] . KJV-Interlinear

28 And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, 'The Teacher is here, and is calling for you.' 29 And when she heard it, she arose quickly, and was coming to Him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him. 31 The Jews then who were with her in the house, and consoling her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, 'Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.' NASB

If you recall from Lk 10:40, Martha was quite the domestic busy body, both preparing and serving for all of the guests. She even complained to Jesus to have Mary give her some help. Mary was listening to Jesus teach rather than helping Martha.

Now we have a little turn of attitudes. It is Martha who first runs to greet Jesus. Though she is glad to see Him, she does not throw herself down at His feet, but does complain (a little bit) about His not being there to save Lazarus.

Jesus speaks only a little bit to smooth her sorrow.

Then, Martha returns to Mary and gives her the message that Jesus obviously had given her, that He wanted Mary to come to where He was. Mary was all wrapped up in her brief, and spurred on in that grief by well wishing friends who perpetuated that grief. To get her out of that environment was the first step toward her recovery from her loss of her brother. Better to focus on God than on ones loss.

Mary goes (hurries) to Jesus, and she falls before Him not in worship but out of her deeply felt sorrow for the loss of her brother.

Even though Jesus moves from place to place usually with a crowd in tow, the friends of Mary and Lazarus apparently were not aware of His return to the city. They even question His motives and abilities in a later verse, after Mary arrives at Jesus location. He neither went into the town, not to the home of Lazarus. There is only sorrow there and people perpetuating that sorrow. There was no comforting going on within the home.

Again, Mary complains (gently) about His not being there sooner. But she is just simply overwrought with grief.

Now we have several contrasting personalities. The apostles are expecting to be stoned to death at any moment. Martha is off the domestic agenda and now recognizes the issue of who Christ really is. Mary knows who He is, but is buried in her emotions. The crowd is clueless as to what is going on, thinking that Mary is running off the tomb to cry there, and then second guessing the motives of Jesus, once they see Him.

Everyone is wrapped up in their own thought patterns, focusing on themselves, at their loss, and no one is focusing on the fact that God is right there with them. We'll leave everyone right there until tomorrow.
