John 11:1-2

1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 And it was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. NASB

We are going to digress a little bit and go to John 11 to bring some points of doctrine together before we resume our study, in Matthew 26, of the Passover meal and the sequence of events throughout the crucifixion. Actually we will be looking to all of the four gospels as our study advances through the last day prior to the crucifixion.

But for now, we need to realize, as we all do I am sure, but we need to 'really' realize the magnitude of the miracles which Jesus performed, and the equally great magnitude of unbelief with which the people rejected Him. We all can look at these events and say to ourselves, that we would have never rejected Christ, had we lived in that day, but then, many of us actually do reject Christ - the written word (if somewhat subtly) by virtue of our not living the Christian life. We surround ourselves with indifference, with compromises in our life style, with many excuses as to why we live the way we live, and not in compliance with Gods commands.

We nod our heads in agreement with many of the things that are said in the gospels, but we come up short when it comes to applying doctrinal principles to our daily life.

Why this now? Because we are going to study a very dramatic event, the resuscitation (not resurrection) of Lazarus, and the impact it had and should of had on folks, as well as the reactions that most folks actually had. Truth often is ignored because there are other agendas which are deemed more important. Politics in our current day should provide us with many very good examples of this contrast between mans selfish desires for power and such, at the expense of what ever is right for a nation. People very easily will ignore their responsibilities and what is right, just as long as they get what they want.

Now for our study. Bethany is just outside of Jerusalem, on the eastern side of the Mount of Olives. Mary and Martha are sisters. They have a brother, Lazarus, who is very sick and will soon die. We have already studied in Matthew, the response of Mary, to Jesus, when she washed His head and feet with a very expensive oil. You will recall that she was reprimanded by the disciples at the instigation of Judas, and so much so, that she actually dropped the bottle and broke it, thus losing all of the oil. They thought that the oil should have been sold for money which could have been given to the poor. A noble but somewhat self righteous attitude.

Here is the reason for Mary's love of Jesus.

Lazarus was very sick and about to die. Mary has already known of Jesus obviously, and is about to send for Him, in hopes that He will come quickly and cure Lazarus of his ailment. This would give him a renewed life and they, the sisters, would be happy again. Right now they are grief stricken, worried, apprehensive, and so forth, as you would expect when a family member is very close to death. Friends are nearby as well, so there was a great deal of concern for Lazarus. He was not a hermit, but apparently had many friends as we will see later.

We have very public man, who is well liked, and who is attended by many folks. The call will go out to find Jesus and have Him return with all haste. The primary concern of family and friends is to have Lazarus cured so that he will not be taken from them.
